Edith Graydon is a young woman living with her family; a good-natured father, emotionally distant mother and a shy, younger sister in a fading middle-class area of London. While not especially bright or ambitious, Edith wants more out of life and with this in mind accepts the marriage proposal of her boyfriend Percy. While a bit better off than Edith, Percy is not the most exciting of partners and after several years Edith begins to grow restless with their marriage. Long regarded as something of a flirt Edith later renews her friendship with Freddy Bywaters, a good-looking and worldly former beau who has just returned to England after serving in the Queen's Navy. After they begin a passionate affair, Edith starts writing a series of letters to her lover in which she confides her ardour for Freddy, her fatigue with Percy...and her intent on killing him.
